Helping Older Adults as their Mobility Changes

October 7, 2021 By Twin Town Villa

It is common for senior citizens to experience issues with mobility and loss of functionality as they age.  Mobility issues could include any challenges that a senior has moving around physically.  Functional limitations would include difficulty with everyday tasks such as eating, using the restroom, preparing food, getting dressed, etc. Additional mobility aids or accessibility modifications could be necessary.

Causes and Effects of Mobility Issues

accessibility and mobility issues - Twin Town VillaLoss of mobility in seniors is usually a result of multiple impairments to muscles, joints, central nervous system, and other physiological systems.  It is not a surprise, that with the loss of mobility, mental and emotional health is also affected.  Not being able to do things independently can affect the quality of life and cause depression.

Preventing Falls

Elderly people are prone to balance issues and falls. This can be a result of already existing mobility issues.  Falls can also be the cause of future mobility issues because the individual may be afraid to do things they once did, or have physical problems or pain as a result of the fall. Here are some tips on preventing falls.

Reducing Mobility Issues

Some mobility issues are unavoidable and just part of the natural aging process. By avoiding being sedentary or sitting for long periods of time, your loved ones will help protect their mobility. Staying active with regular exercise also helps elderly people to stay limber and mobile. For those still living at home, a safety audit can help to identify potential fall hazards. Of course, a healthy diet can also make a difference.

Mobility Aids & Accessibility

There are a variety of mobility aids and accessibility products that help older adults as their mobility needs change. At TwinTown Villa, our rooms and living areas have built-in accessibility aids such as grab bars, accessible bathrooms, and more.  When mobility aids such as wheelchairs, canes, or walkers are used, the resident and their families are assured they are in a safe and accessible space at Twin Town Villa.  Our residents enjoy many of the personal care services that reduce the stress of living alone or having to do home modifications.

Assisted Living for Stroke Patients

September 29, 2021 By Twin Town Villa

Having a stroke is scary and it can happen out of nowhere, especially for people who are over the age of 65. The long-term impacts can affect talking, movement, and overall function. After a stroke, it is difficult for both the individual and their caregivers because there are many decisions to make regarding rehabilitation, recovery, and future living environment.  On top of that,  the cost of stroke recovery can be expensive, especially if family members have to miss work in order to help their parent or loved one with stroke recovery.

What is a Stoke?

A stroke is a type of brain injury. Every stroke is different depending on the individual’s overall health, the part of the brain that is injured, and to what extent. Learn more about strokes and stroke prevention from the American Stroke Association.

Decisions for Stroke Patients & their Families

Assisted Living for Stroke Patients - Twin Town Villa Breckenridge MN

Families of stroke victims and their caregivers are usually faced with the decision of caring for their loved one at home or moving them into an assisted living community like Twin Town Villa.  Many see the benefits of moving them into a community where they are cared for 24/7 by professionals.

Evaluating the Home Living Situation After a Stroke

Helping a stroke patient decide what to do next can be hard. Here are some questions that will help you determine the best home setting for your loved one after a stroke.

  • Are they safe to be home alone? Will someone be available to help them during the day if needed?
  • Are they worried about falling?
  • Does their home provide enough space for rehab staff to provide therapy services?
  • Will their mental and physical needs be met?
  • Will they have help with medications or other medical equipment needs?
  • Do they have the proper home modifications to be safe at home?

Many families of stroke victims choose to transition them into Twin Town Villa so that all their physical, medical, and mental needs are met.  This provides families with peace of mind that their loved one is getting healthy meals, a safe and comfortable environment, and professional staff looking after them.

Heart Health Tips for Senior Citizens

July 23, 2021 By Twin Town Villa

As our family members age, it gets more important to work on heart-healthy habits. People who are ages 65 years of age and older are more likely to suffer from a heart attack, stroke, or suffer from coronary heart disease. According to the National Institute on Aging, heart disease is a major cause of disability for millions of older people, limiting their activity and eroding their quality of life.

How do we Manage Heart Health & Aging?

Reduce Stress: The COVID-19 pandemic was a stressful time for people of all ages, but especially our elderly loved ones. At Twin Town Villa, we worked hard to help our residents manage stress and see their loved ones, if even through Facetime or window visits. It is important to manage stress for your heart and overall health.

Manage Weight: A healthy diet that is low in calories with fruits and vegetables will help to maintain a healthy weight and minimize obesity. Simple things like limiting portion size make a difference. Seniors should get at least 5 servings a day of colorful fruits and veggies. At Twin Town Villa, our healthy menu plan ensures healthy portions and high-nutrition and delicious meals.

Heart Health for Senior Citizens - Twin Town Villa Breckenridge, MN

Prioritize Fitness & Activity: Fitness and movement such as walking, yoga, stretching, biking, or anything that gets you up and moving will help your heart stay healthy. The goal is to get moving rather than sitting.  At Twin Town Villa, we have several activities planned throughout the day and encourage physical activity for both the body and mind.

Know the Symptoms of Heart Disease (and Talk to Your Doctor): Ask your doctor questions about heart disease, blood pressure, and cholesterol numbers.  Know if you have a family history of diabetes, heart disease, or cancers. Here are some of the common symptoms of heart disease.

Keep a “Pulse” on Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, and Diabetes: These can be major risks for heart disease. High blood pressure or stiffness in the arteries can increase with age. Pay attention to increased sensitivity to salt, too. This can cause an increase in blood pressure and cause dangerous ankle or foot swelling.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Over time, not getting enough sleep can raise your risk of heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.  Sleep is simply a pillar to good health and quality of life.
