How to Help Your Senior Loved Ones Have a Happier Holiday

December 16, 2025 By Twin Town Villa

If you have a senior relative or loved one who is at risk of senior depression, isolation, or the holiday blues, be proactive about offering help. Here are some ways to help your senior loved one have a happier holiday!

Explore Community Holiday Events

If your loved one is in an assisted living facility or care home, ask for a copy of the facility’s events schedule. Look for events that family and friends can attend, and plan to join your loved one for some holiday activities. If they live alone or with you or another family member, look for events in your community. Prioritize events that incorporate shared interests or skills, such as ornament decorating, gift-making, holiday baking, or volunteer work. You can even simply drive around looking at holiday lights and decorations in the neighborhood.

Encourage Friends and Family to Reach Out

Even if friends and family are in a different city or state, you can encourage them to reach out to your loved one. Set up a phone or video call with the whole family or create a schedule of rotating weekly phone calls. If you have family nearby, arrange for visits. Make these visits easy on your loved one by providing transportation or brainstorming low-energy activities that won’t exhaust them.

Support Their Feelings

Above all, give your loved one space to express their feelings, and offer support and encouragement. Don’t pressure them into participating in activities they have no interest in or push them beyond their boundaries. If you see signs of senior depression or isolation, consult with a professional about the best method of intervention.

At Twin Town Villas, we understand that the holidays can increase anxiety and tension among our residents and their families. We are mindful and thoughtful about creating inclusive spaces where residents can participate in the holiday events and activities of their choice, from non-denominational and secular activities to religious services.
